Observethe following general instructions and requirements whenperforming cooling system maintenance.a.Thread locking compound is used withmost threaded fasteners. If a threadedfastener will not break loose, heatthreaded area of fastener from 500° to600°F (232° to 315°C) with heater gun. Ifthe special solvent used to remove threadlocking compound from screw threadsfails to remove buildup, discard fastener.b.Always tag mating connectors and fittingsbefore disconnecting. Tagging of matingconnectors and fittings will easereassembly and reduce assembly errors.c.Discard all removed gaskets, seals,preformed packings, self-locking nuts,lockwashers, spring pins, and deformedhardware.d.Inspect all removed components forobvious wear or damage. Replace allworn, bent, broken, or otherwise damagedparts. Test leaky radiator in accordancewith procedures in TM 750-254.e.Inspect all removed fasteners for threaddamage. If thread damage is found,replace fastener. Replace flat washers ifgalled or bent. Use screw extractor set(Item 15, Appendix E) to remove brokenstuds or screws.f.Clean painted surfaces thoroughly beforerepainting. Do not paint over rust orcorrosion. Reference TM 430139 forequipment painting requirements.g.Torque values cited in the text apply tomodified SAE Grade 8 fasteners atrequired clamping loads.h.Use only authorized replacement parts.Refer to TM 5389537324P, Repair Partsand Special Tools List (RPSTL) forauthorized replacement parts.i.Observe all warnings and cautions. Wearprotective clothing and equipment asspecified. Observe the Safety and HazardWarnings provided in TACOM technicalbulletin TB 43-0216.6-1
