Engine Starter Removal -- Continued.
1. Remove nut (Figure 1, Item 5), lock washer (Figure 1, Item 4), and four wires (Figure 1, Items 2, 3, 6, and 7)
from starter upper stud (Figure 1, Item 8). Discard lock washer.
2. Remove nut (Figure 1, Item 18), lock washer (Figure 1, Item 19), and three wires (Figure 1, Items12, 17, and
20) from starter lower stud (Figure 1, Item 10). Discard lock washer.
3. Remove nut (Figure 1, Item 16), connecting wire (Figure 1, Item 15), and lock washer (Figure 1, Item 14) from
solenoid (Figure 1, Item 13). Discard lock washer.
4. Remove two bolts (Figure 1, Item 11) and starter (Figure 1, Item 9) from rear gear case (Figure 1, Item 1).
5. Remove any dirt or debris from rear gear case (Figure 1, Item 1).
Engine Starter Installation
CAUTION
Flywheel ring gear and starter pinion gear must be properly mated during installation. Failure to
comply may cause damage to equipment.
1. Install starter (Figure 1, Item 9) and two bolts (Figure 1, Item 11) into rear gear case (Figure 1, Item 1) finger-
tight.
2. Torque two mounting bolts (Figure 1, Item 11) to 32 foot-pounds (ft-lb) (43 Newton meters (Nm)).
CAUTION
Use tags and markings applied during removal process as a guide for installation of electrical
wires. Failure to comply will cause damage to equipment.
3. Install new lock washer (Figure 1, Item 14), connecting wire (Figure 1, Item 15), and nut (Figure 1, Item 16) to
4. Install three wires (Figure 1, Items 12, 17, and 20), new lock washer (Figure 1, Item 19), and nut (Figure 1,
Item 18) to starter lower stud (Figure 1, Item 10).
5. Install four wires (Figure 1, Items 2, 3, 4, and 7), new lock washer (Figure 1, Item 4), and nut (Figure 1, Item
5) to starter upper stud (Figure 1, Item 8).
