TM 5-3895-373-103.3.5AddingEngineCoolant.a.Park the paving machine on level ground. Shutoff the engine per paragraph 2.11. After theengine stops, place the ignition switch (1) to theON position.b.Check coolant temperature gauge (2) on gaugepanel J until water temperature cools to 120°F(49°C). Place ignition switch to the STOPposition.c. Open front top left access door per paragraph2.24.1.Extreme care should be taken whenremoving radiator cap if temperaturegauge reads above 180°F (82°C).Contact by steam or hot coolant mayresult in injury or death to personnelUse a clean, thick, waste cloth or likematerial to remove the cap. Avoidusing gloves. If hot water soaksthrough gloves, personnel could beburned.Use extreme care when removing theradiator pressure cap. Suddenrelease of pressure can cause asteam flash which could seriouslyinjure personnel.d.Use a cleaning cloth (Item 1, Appendix D) toslowly loosen radiator cap (3) to the first stop torelease pressure.e.After pressure is released, remove radiator cap(3).f.Visually check engine coolant level. Propercoolant level is below filler neck and above theradiator fins.CAUTIONA 50:50 ratio of antifreeze to watermixture must be premixed beforeadding coolant to the radiator. Theability of antifreeze to remove heatfrom the engine is not as good aswater. Pouring antifreeze into theengine first could cause anoverheated condition before theliquids are completely mixed.g.Mix the required amount of 50:50 ratio ofantifreeze (Item 2, Appendix D) to water mixtureand fill radiator to proper level.h.Replace radiator cap (3) and tighten.i.Close front top left access door per paragraph2.24.2.3-23
