GENERAL MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES.All unit level maintenance shall be performed inaccordance with good and safe shop practices. Observethe following general instructions and requirements whenperforming body, cab, and hood maintenance.a.Areas of the paving machine exposed topaving material buildup require cleaning priorto disassembly. Use hammers, chisels, andscrapers to remove thickest sections ofbuildup. If available, use heater gun to softendeposits adhering to components; removesoftened buildup with putty knife. Whenheating paving material, keep second personwith fire extinguisher at hand and avoidoverheating. If heater gun is not available, usesolvent or fuel washdown system to softenpaving material.b.Thread locking compound is used with mostthreaded fasteners. If a threaded fastener willnot break loose, heat threaded area offastener from 500° to 6000F (232° to 315°C)with heater gun. If the special solvent used toremove thread locking compound from screwthreads fails to remove buildup, discardfastener.c.Discard all removed gaskets, seals, preformedpackings, self-locking nuts, lockwashers,spring pins, and deformed hardware.d.Inspect all removed components for obviouswear or damage. Replace all worn, bent,broken, or otherwise damaged parts.e.Inspect all removed fasteners for threaddamage. If thread damage is found, replacefastener. Replace flat washers if galled orbent. Use screw extractor set (Item 15,Appendix E) to remove broken studs orscrews.f.Clean painted surfaces thoroughly beforerepainting. Do not paint over rust or corrosion.Cover air breather ports and hydrauliccomponents. Do not paint bearings or otherparts that require surface lubrication.Reference TM 43-0139 for equipment paintingrequirements.g.Torque values cited in the text apply tomodified SAE Grade 8 fasteners at requiredclamping loads.h.Use only authorized replacement parts. Referto TM 5-3895-373-24P, Repair Parts andSpecial Tools List (RPSTL) for authorizedreplacement parts.i.Observe all warnings and cautions. Wearprotective clothing and equipment as specified.Observe the Safety and Hazard Warningsprovided in TACOM technical bulletin TB 43-0216.11-1
