TM 5-3895-373-102.27.2 ColdWeatherOperations.a.Use the following steps to start the pavingmachine at temperatures below 50°F (10°C).(1)Turn the ignition switch to the preheatposition and hold for 10 seconds to heatthe induction heater.CAUTIONStarter motor may overheat ifoperated longer than 30 seconds. Ifengine does not start, allow startermotor to cool for two to threeminutes before trying again. If enginefails to start after three attempts, notify Unit Maintenance.(2)Turn the ignition switch to the start positionand immediately release when the enginestarts. The switch will spring return to theON position.b. Maximum extreme cold temperature for machineoperation is -50°F (-46°C).NOTEPaving machine operation will besluggish until the hydraulic oilreaches normal operatingtemperature.c. If the machine will start at temperatures higherthan -50°F (-460C), the machine can beoperated after the engine coolant temperaturestarts to rise at the gauge panel temperaturegauge. Other non-propulsion hydraulic functionscannot be operated until hydraulic oiltemperature reaches 100°F (38°C). No otherspecial operating procedures are required.2-98 2.27.3 ExtremeDustyandSandstormConditions.a. Under extreme wind driven dust conditions, check air cleaner service indicator every 1/2hour of operation.b. Service the air cleaner per table 2-1, OperatorPMCS, twice daily.c. Replace air cleaner filter element per paragraph3.3.7 after every 50 hours of continuousoperation in extreme dusty conditions.WARNINGDeath or serious injury could occur ifcompressed air is directed againstskin. Do not use compressed air forcleaning or drying unless thepressure is/was reduced to 30 psi(207 kPa) or less. When working withcompressed air, always use chipguards, eye protection, and otherpersonal protective equipment.d. Use compressed air to blow out all dirt anddebris from hydraulic oil cooler and radiator.e. The paving machine shall not be operated in asandstorm. Take the following precautions toprotect the machine from damage during asandstorm.(1)Ensure extension screeds are retracted, hopper wings are open, and screed is intravel position to protect cylinder shaftsfrom abrasive blowing sand.(2)Coat chrome guide shafts on screed witha heavy coat of automotive and artillerygrease (Item 5, Appendix D).(3)Cover air cleaner cap assembly withsheet plastic.(4)Install protective covers on operatorconsole and screed crew control boxes.(5)Close all access doors and covers.2.27.4 HighAltitudeOperation. The paving machinediesel engine has a considerable amount of reservehorsepower to compensate for machine operation ataltitudes up to 10,000 ft (3050 m). If engine bogs downat high altitude, reduce paving speed until engine runssmoothly.2-98
