TM 5-3895-373-102.28.5 EmergencyStarting.Slave start the pavingmachine whenever a low battery charge conditionprevents proper starter operation. All batteryconnections must be clean and secure for the slave startprocedure to work properly. Use the followingprocedures to first check for secure battery connectionsand then to slave start the paving machine.WARNINGAlways check for a voltage change atthe gauge panel voltmeter beforeslave starting the paving machine. Ifthe voltmeter does not indicate avoltage change, the batteries may notbe properly connected. Damage tobatteries and cables or serious injuryto personnel may result if slavestarting the paving machine withimproperly connected batteries.a.While watching the gauge panel voltmeter, turnignition switch to PREHEAT. Check for achange in the voltage indication at the gaugepanel voltmeter. If no voltage change is seen,notify your supervisor. Do not try to slave startthe paving machine unless a voltage change isseen at the gauge panel voltmeter.NOTESlave starting the paving machine isa two-person task. One person isneeded to operate the slaving vehiclewhile the second person starts thepaving machine.b.Turn paving machine ignition switch off andremove the key.c.Position slaving vehicle close enough to thepaving machine for slave cable hookup.d.Turn slaving vehicle ignition switch off andremove the key. Make sure all slaving vehicleelectrical switches are turned off.2-107
