All active fault codes must be investigated prior to replacing the engine Electronic Control Module
(ECM). Failure to comply may cause damage to equipment.
Some sensors share harness wiring. Malfunctions in certain sensors or in the engine ECM may
cause false errors to display because of this shared wiring. For this malfunction (SPN#97,
FMI#4), harness wiring is shared by the water-in-fuel sensor, the camshaft position sensor, the
rail fuel pressure sensor, and the intake manifold pressure/temperature sensor.

TEST OR INSPECTION
1. Engine ECM wiring harness or
1. Disconnect water-in-fuel wiring
water-in-fuel sensor connector
harness connector W24 C1
from water-in-fuel sensor (WP
0448, Vol 3, Figure 45).
2. Inspect the water-in-fuel sensor
1. If damaged, replace fuel filter
and connector pins for damage.
(WP 0336, Vol 2).
2. If no damage is found, proceed
to next test.
